SME Financing in the Asia-Pacific Region: Crisis and Countermeasures

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are a crucial driving force for innovation, employment and development in a country’s economy. But these SMEs have long faced difficulties in financing. And thus, long-term sustainable development has been restrained.

Amid capital depletion, risk aversion and credit contraction in the current global economic crisis, the issue of financing for SMEs is a pressing issue for all nations. It needs to be addressed with joint efforts by governments, financial institutions and enterprises, to enhance innovation in financial systems, products and services, and to improve the sustainable development of SMEs.

Symposium “ Uganda AIDS Orphans Meets Artist”

July 11, 2009 13:30-17:00

As part of the “ Orphan Meets Artist/ Artist Meets Orphan” program, we are coming to a final stage of activity 1 “Uganda’s AIDS Orphan Meets Artist Tatsuo Miyajima”.

From the past three series of study sessions and the workshop in Uganda, we have learned about the current situation of Uganda and about the HIV/AIDS orphans and how art can give influence to the Uganda children.  The workshop was designed by students who have agreed on Tatsuo Miyajima’s action, and to represent their thoughts, Mr. Miyajima went to Uganda to hold a workshop with the Uganda orphans.

SME Course 2

-Improving Manufacturing Productivity -

29th May - 2nd July, 2009

“Improving Manufacturing Productivity” is part of a capacity building seminar series developed by the Tokyo Development Learning Center for domestic businesses, especially SMEs. It aims to help SMEs grow in today’s competitive, global environment, enabling them to thrive and serve their communities as the engine of economic growth. Organized in collaboration with GDLN Distance Learning Centers and the Central Japan Industries Association (ChuSanRen) will provide all course content.
The course, consisting of 5 modules conducted over a 5-week period, will cover Toyota Production System and 5S. as well as case studies of good practice from international and regional firms.

Human Security & Disaster Management

imageThe Eleventh CITYNET Japan Forum is organised to address the important issue of human security and disaster management. The Forum highlights the strategies and approaches of Mumbai City which has faced not only natural disasters, such as flooding, but also man-made disasters, such as security issues. Mr. Rajendra Vale from the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) was invited to speak about what Mumbai has learned from the recent disasters and the City’s policy has changed. Dr. Rajib Shaw from Kyoto University whose expertise is on Disaster Management spoke about Japan’s experience on managing the disaster risks and its transferability.

Second Blended Learning Program to Train Mother and Child Health Care Specialists in Mongolia

March 5 & 6, 2009

TDLC, Kitasato University and Mongolia Nurses Association delivered the second blended learning program to train Mother and Child Health care specialists in Mongolia on March 5 & 6, 2009.  This 2-day program was delivered to over 400 participants at 4 sites in Ulaan Bataar and other rural locations in Mongolia.

Corporate Social Responsibility for Sustainable Business and Development Asia Series

Presented by the World Bank Institute, the Asian Institute of Management and the Tokyo Development Learning Center

March 17-19, 2009

Over 70 people in six locations throughout Asia took part in a new course “CSR for Sustainable Business and Development”. The course analyzed the relevance and benefits of the CSR activities and explored the connection between corporate strategy and development issues in Asia.
